Illegal downloads are on the wane in the UK according to a survey results published yesterday on Music Ally. A survey of 1,000 UK music fans suggested that illegal downloads and file sharing of audio content had decreased to 17 per cent in January 2009 from 22 per cent in December 2007.
Music streaming sites such as Spotify and YouTube are said to have contributed to the decline in P2P and torrenting.
Paul Brindley, the CEO of Music Ally said, “File sharing is a moving target, so industry and Government policies need to recognise this. It’s already being somewhat displaced by other means of accessing music for free. Some are licensed [Spotify] and some involve a bit of both [YouTube]…
Kids find services like YouTube much more convenient for checking out new music than file sharing. But even YouTube can become a source of piracy with some kids ripping YouTube videos and turning them into free MP3 downloads”.
Last month Virgin Media announced plans to offer unlimited DRM-free downloads to its broadband subscribers following a deal with the Universal. Orange has also recently removed DRM restrictions from their paid-for Orange Music Store offering and may well follow Virgin’s lead in the future.
In honour of these announcements, we’ve compiled the Official Broadband Finder Spotify Playlist. Featuring a choice selection of tracks which we feel capture the spirit of the broadband market in the UK.
To highlight the benefits of a broadband connection over the old fashioned way, we’ve paired up ‘Dial Up’ by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists with Green Day’s ‘Good Riddance’. Unlimited broadband packages get a nod via 2 Unlimited’s ‘No Limit’, whilst Stereo MC’s ‘Connected’ underscores how important broadband connections have become to the modern home.
Tracks such as ‘My New Laptop’ and ‘Digital’ appear for obvious reasons. TalkTalk is represented by 1984 hit single ‘It’s My Life’ by synthpop glumsters of the same name. ISPs BT, Sky and Orange all get mentions via tracks of the same name, and Virgin Media is in there, represented by the Richard Cheese version of Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’. We also felt it right to include the Unofficial Anthem of the Internet - ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ by Rick Astley.
