BT Broadband free 20Mbps Accelerator upgrade
BT Broadband has just announced that it has completed upgrades of hundreds of its exchanges which will give customers access to speeds of up to 20Mbps. 549 exchanges, serving 10 million UK homes, have been upgraded, with more homes to be added throughout the rest of the year.
What’s more is that homes eligible for an upgrade will be able to speed up for virtually nothing. Although the theoretical maximum speed available on a fully pimped ADSL2+ line is 24Mbps, BT Broadband has taken a leaf out of O2 Broadband’s book and will be advertising the top speed as being 20Mbps. This is ostensibly to advertise a more realistic top speed, as the theoretical maximum is rarely if ever experienced by broadband customers.
The BT Broadband Accelerator speed booster pack is available for BT Total Broadband customers who only have to fork out £1.20 postage to get faster speeds for life. The BT Broadband Accelerator pack also includes an interstitial plate or ‘I-plate’ – a small device that is easily inserted into the main telephone socket and reduces electrical interference allowing for stronger, more reliable connections. The Accelerator pack comes with a 10-step set up guide, and includes information on how to optimise your broadband connection.
All of the BT Broadband packages will cost the same as they currently do, so those who can get 20Mbps speeds can sign up for as little as £7.78 per month on BT Broadband Option 1. “We have a track record of not charging customers any more when we increase the speed and this time is no different,” says John Petter, managing director of BT’s Consumer division. “BT broadband customers won’t have to pay any more to get higher speeds.” Existing customers will be asked to sign a new contract once they upgrade their connection.

well i have not had this upgrade, or my freands, bt are advrtising 20mbps on there site but when i put aload of phone numbers in, it still says only 2mbps, bt are a joke feel like im geting ript off all the time with poor dial up speeds at peek times and bad traffic shaping and throttaling the iplayer / vision, and still bad customer services, i phoned up about the 20mbps upgrade got passted around 5 customer support, then they told me not till next year for my exchange, then they said it may not make a diffrence at all to my speed due to my line and distance from the exchange, what a JOKE this is down to poor coper wires that bt rent us, my contract is up in feb 2010 and i will be so happy so say bye bt, never again is this company getting my cash

Well I have just moved from a rural area on a Wi-Fi network that gives me a genuine 3Mbps to the outskirts of Scarborough on a newish estate and the max speed is 1.5Mbps in off peak times and about 256K at peak times. I wish I could leave BT but what is the point no matter who I go to there is only the BT cabling into my house no fibre optic or cable, my partner lives within 600 meters of the exchange and still only gets 4.5Mbs. I think there should be much more honesty about speed claims I don’t know anyone who gets 8Mbps consistently on BT.

The speeds vary but I hope they’ll soon improve the quality of their service.
