O2 to launch home phone service in March RSS

obiwan2O2 has just announced that from March this year it will be offering fixed-line voice calls along with mobile phone and broadband services.

This make O2 a triple-play competitor, now competing with mobile rivals Orange and Virgin Media on three fronts.

O2 will be launching two home phone packages, Evening & Weekend and Anytime. The Evening & Weekend option costs £9.50 a month and provides calls to UK residential numbers.

The Anytime package costs £12.50 and provides unlimited anytime calles to UK home as well as 0845/0870 numbers and landlines in over 20 international countries. Extra features such as Hide My Number, Last Caller ID, Voicemail and Call Waiting as well as Caller Display, Call Barring and Ring Back will also be available on a Bolt On style basis for an extra monthly cost.

This is good news for O2 Broadband customers who can now pay for all of their communication needs under one bill. O2 mobile customers will be able to get O2′s Standard broadband package and Evening & Weekend phone package for just £17 per month, including line rental. The press release says that a BT line is required to make use of the service, so we imagine that line rental will be payable to BT for non-O2 mobile customers.

It’s worth noting that O2 began life as BT Cellnet, BT’s mobile phone network which was eventually sold off. Since then O2 has acquired Be Broadband, adding fixed-line calls to it’s roster, and launched a mobile broadband service. The circle is now complete.
