The usual double talk from UK ISP's concerning what is "unlimited". BT Infinity Option 2 says "unlimited usage" but their FUP is the great get-out clause allowing them to cut your connection speed at will, they don't & will never define what they consider to be "heavy useage". As a subscriber you have no way of knowing what they mean by that. Also how do BT know that this will "only affect 1% of our users" when the FTTC service isn't available until April 2010 some 7 weeks away.

BT Infinity, BT’s next-gen cable broadband packages, are available to order now. As we revealed last week, there are two BT Innfinity packages, Option 1 and Option 2.

BT Infinity Option 1 provides top download speeds of 40Mbps, comes with a 20GB usage cap and costs £19.99 a month plus a one-off activation fee of £50.

Option 2 costs just £24.99 a month, provides the same 40Mbps maximum speed but comes with unlimited downloads.

Both of these packages come with the BT Infinity Home Hub included - the cable version of BT’s popular wireless router. ‘Basic security’ comes with BT Infinity Option 1, which includes McAfee parental controls. Infinity Option 2 comes with McAfee’s NetProtect Plus security package which includes anti-virus and anti-spyware software was well as parental controls.

The terms and conditions on BT’s Broadband Fair Usage Policy page were updated this morning, revealing that the BT Infinity Option 2 package is subject to the same conditions as BT’s ADSL-based Option 3 offering:

BT Infinity sounds ok.

But yet again with the option they have to reduce speed raises a question.

Of how honest are the quoted speeds.

Also monthly limits are limiting.

Virgin Media is the only ISP providing 50Meg speed. I think this sometimes becomes so hard to believe where 80% of the UK population is still trying to cope with 2-8meg broadband.

Likes the article and very informative.

Thanks

Tulip. I have exactly the same problem. Add to that that I legitimately buy/download large pieces of software, such as PC games through the Steam online distribution platform, as well as not owning a TV, so I stream what I want to watch online.

My 'unlimited' 10MB connection has been cut down to 0.3MB the last 2 days and today it is just under 4MB...That is some heavy handed traffic shaping.

Also. I pay £26 a month solely for the 10MB connection, but new customers are being charged £17 for the same service. Way to reward customer loyalty eh?

They all lie about the services they provide, the limit of the connection is very rarely at the limit you can expect, which is why they advertise it at "around" 4mb connection so they can justify the fact that you sure as hell arent going to get 4mb with the addition of one simple word. And choking people for actually using the service is the height on injustice, thats like telling people ok im going to sell you a car, but if you want one with an engine in it you will have to pay extra. So this news is a non event as corporations have been ****ing over the little people for as long as can be remembered.

Good catch, DieselDen. I was really thinking about this deal and was even prepared to overlook the meagre 1GB allowance in favour of the built in HSDPA and treating it as buying the netbook in 24 installments of £25 but having a bonus of 1GB of data thrown in per month. However, the fact that the battery has half the capacity of the normal 6 cell is an absolute show stopper for me. Have you seen how much an OEM 6 cell costs? £100+!!! unless you buy one of the those crappy ones from China that last about 6 months before failing.

No deal but as soon as Voda£one rectify this then I'm in.

I have moved into a hosue where there is an active BT line (it has dial tone). Talktalk are the cheapest package by far but will charge £59 to install a new line (not physically, just at the exchange, giving you a new talktalk phone no). Some companies like plusnet will do this for free. I worked out the costs over 18 months and talktalk are about the same overall, but the 40gb limit made my mind up.

I have been with talktalk before at 2 previous houses. The first had no issues over a 4 year period. The second went very wrong indeed when I moved hosue due to talktalk's very poor customer service, and thier inability to communicate with you or in my case, BT and the fact they told me I could pay BT line rental before I moved, but afterwards told me I had to pay them (get your facts right talktalk)

I'm pretty sure though that because BT are not involved this time, everything will be ok. Take my advice though, make notes of every time you speak to them. If anything does go wrong, you'll be glad you did.

This tax on broadband, will be just like the petrol tax, every budget you will see an extra few pence here and a few there, which will ultimately be past on to the consumer by the companies who have to cover the extra cost by being a broadband user, thus an increase in the cost of living, and as more people get to use this service will make this a nice little unseen urner for the westminster boys club.
