Getting your MAC code

What is switching?

Switching is the name given to the process of moving your broadband connection from one ISP (Internet Service Provider) to another. Most ISPs will allow you to switch your broadband service, usually after a fixed contract period, giving you the flexibility to be able to change your provider and get the best possible deal.

As the broadband market becomes more and more competitive, providers are offering a whole range of services to choose from. Mobile phone network providers have become increasingly interested in providing broadband for their existing customers – you may find a better deal that allows you to make cheaper calls as well as surf the net for a single monthly fee, you may want to switch if your friends are all on the same network and you want to be able to talk for less, or you may want an ISP that allows you do download more music which you can then transfer straight to your phone.

Whatever your reason for switching, if you decide that you want a change, there are a few things that you should consider before doing so.

What is a MAC code?

In order to switch from your current provider you will need to contact them directly and get them to issue you with a MAC (Migration Authorisation Code) code. A MAC code is an authorisation number allowing you to migrate from one provider to another without interruptions, and should be issued to you from your provider within five working days. Once you have a MAC code you will be able to switch providers.
