ISPs advised to be clearer over broadband restrictions

Recent research has concluded that internet service providers (ISPs) in the UK could be facing a tough time in the future and advised them to clarify tariffs and broadband allowances.

Conducted by ZyXEL and leading analysts Quocirca, the study reported that small ISPs are being edged out of the market.

It stated that the boom of ISPs is on the wane but offered a glimmer of hope, saying that the increasingly advanced technology in the industry meant that it was once again attracting financial interest, reports ISP Review.

One of the suggestions made on the basis of the findings was that ISPs should offer a greater range of services.

Rather than one or two different packages, they should offer different levels and quality of access.

These should be complimented by increased ease of use and understanding for consumers.

In addition, it was advised that bundles, such as those that offer VoIP or cable television as well, should be used to provide options to consumers rather than to lock them into a contract.

It was also recommended that ISPs find better ways to explain their products and services to the less technically literate clientele so that they can make a more informed decision on which tariff or ISP is better for them.

In related news, AOL recently released findings that 59 per cent of consumers in the UK have switched services for their mobile phone, broadband or utilities.

The credit crunch was identified as a major factor in this mass migration, with a large number of people looking for a cheaper and shorter contracts.

The north-east of England was found to have the lowest loyalty level with 74 per cent changing providers in the past 12 months.
