Broadband news achive for September 2007.
Microsoft extends XP withdrawal deadline

Software giant Microsoft has announced that it will extend the sales availability of its Windows XP operating system after complaints that it was being withdrawn too soon.
In a drive to switch all Windows users to the new Vista system, which was launched last year, Microsoft has planned to withdraw XP from the shelves on January 30th 2008.
However, after customer feedback, Microsoft has extended the deadline an extra five months to June 30th. The company will continue to sell the Windows XP Starter Edition for low-cost PCs until June 30, 2010.

TalkTalk preparing for customers to WalkWalk

Broadband provider Carphone Warehouse is preparing itself for a major loss of custom over the coming months as hundreds of thousands of free broadband contracts expire.
Eighteen months ago, the company launched its TalkTalk free unlimited broadband package, which was the first such package on the market.
The company has overcome a number of complaints about lack of availability of the service since then to become the third biggest ISP on the market. UK Broadband User Group suggests many customers may look at other deals on the market now that their contracts are expiring.

Pipex 'to sell off rest of company'

Broadband service provider Pipex has appointed an investment bank to sell off its remaining assets following the buy-out by fellow ISP Tiscali.
UBS has been appointed by the company to sell off the assets after Pipex recorded a loss for the first six months since the acquisition by Tiscali started, the Independent reports.
The residual Pipex business currently includes a web hosting unit and a wireless broadband joint venture with Intel built around the WiMAX standard. Pipex recorded a loss of more than £8.5 million in the first six months of 2007.
