Google 'reaches 89% of UK market'

Search engine giant Google was once again the most visited website in September, with more than 28 million unique visitors from the UK during the month, new figures show.
Google's stranglehold over British broadband users is such that 89 per cent of the UK internet market used Google or its affiliates during the month, statistics from comScore suggest.
Microsoft, eBay and Yahoo! all trail Google in the top ten most visited sites, however, Wikipedia saw a 15 per cent growth during the month as the new school year started. The biggest growth throughout the whole UK market was seen at Fish4's sites, which grew by 34 per cent during September.

Sky breezes to 1m customer milestone

Internet service provider Sky Broadband has passed the one million customer barrier a little over a year after launching.

Less then 14 months after pay-TV company Sky launched its broadband service, the firm is the sixth biggest broadband provider in the UK, only slightly behind Orange.
Sky is the fastest company to achieve the milestone, after advertising the service as part of a bundle - combining it with digital TV and home phone deals. The company estimates that around 70 per cent of Sky Broadband customers are taking up the pay-TV option.
James Murdoch, Sky's chief executive, said: "Sky entered the broadband marketplace because we saw an opportunity to challenge the established players and give customers something better. Our aim is to meet the hunger for better quality, better service and better value, so to be the choice of one million customers after just 14 months is a real achievement."

Broadband switching difficulties 'more than halve'

Complaints to telecoms watchdog Ofcom about difficulties switching broadband providers have more than halved this year, according to reports.
While Ofcom receives an average of 180 complaints a week from customers finding is difficult to switch providers, this is down from 500 per week last year, thisismoney.co.uk reports.
Since February this year, Ofcom ruled that all broadband providers should give customers the Mac serial number - needed to start the connection - within five working days. However, some customers are still waiting in excess of two weeks to set up their broadband connections.
