Broadband news achive for February 2008.
Broadband advertising could be investigated

Broadband users could find that their browsing history is passed on to advertising company Phorm, which will result in targeted marketing deemed more "relevant, rewarding and valuable".
The Register reports that BT, Virgin Media and Talk Talk are set to implement the services of Phorm, while Orange, Tiscali and Sky are postponing decisions.
A spokesperson for Sky said: "Of paramount importance is the online safety of our customers and will only implement a solution when we can use customer data in a responsible way which safeguards privacy."

Better deal for broadband users sought

Additional charges set by broadband and other communication service providers are set to be curbed following an announcement by industry watchdog Ofcom.
The news comes after concerns were raised that falling headline prices were not including additional charges, such as fees accrued when paying by cheque and for late payments.
Chief executive of Ofcom Ed Richards said: "Consumers are benefiting from greater competition and lower prices. But for consumers to get an all round fair deal they need to know the full costs of the services they are buying."

Domain names 'bought for life'

The demand for domain names has been kept buoyant because they can be retained for a lifetime, even when users switch providers, according to Domainmonster.com.
Business broadband users may be particularly interested in the reminder from the domain registration provider that renewing a website name can ensure it remains in the hands of the company, although the same applies for personal websites.
Managing director of Domainmonster.com Matt Mansell commented: "[A] domain name doesn't have to move with the service provider, it's held by a central body and as long as you renew it online it remains yours for as long as you'd like."
