Spam guidelines published

Internet users could find that their broadband provider will help further in the fight against spam emails, if new advice is taken up, reports the BBC.
The Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG) has released guidelines which suggest that internet service providers block 'port 25' which spam mail travels through, as well as introducing separate servers for emails received and those which have been forwarded.
A senior anti-spam technologist Matt Sergeant from MessageLabs told the corporation: "Some ISPs will always remain wide open even if we succeed in closing port 25 ... but that doesn't mean that it isn't worth doing. If we don't do it spam volumes will increase."

Birmingham music promoted through broadband

The sights and sounds of the Birmingham International Jazz Festival will be shared around the world this year, thanks to a new website launched by Fireloop Creative.
Broadband customers not able to attend the festival will be able to visit the new website, which encourages community participation in a bid to attract new audiences, reports the Birmingham Post.
Jim Simpson, festival director, explained to the paper: "The internet has changed the music industry and we need to embrace the technologies of tomorrow to encourage more visitors to events like the Birmingham Jazz Festival."

More Scottish areas to get connected

It has been revealed that more remote areas of Scotland are to get affordable broadband connections, reports the Press and Journal.
The project will benefit 3,800 customers who registered under a scheme headed up by enterprise minister Jim Mather, in a bid to get full broadband access across the country.
Mr Mather explained: "Scotland currently has over 99 per cent broadband availability and we have been monitoring access difficulties - thats why we asked those without access to come forward and register."
