BT expands voice over internet services

BT has bought Silicon Valley-based Ribbit Corporation for a sum of £53 million to extend its voice and data services.
The web telephony company is essentially a platform for creating voice-based applications over the internet. It has already created voice applications used by Facebook and iGoogle.
Ribbit's SmartSwitch handles the complexities of mobile, landline and internet telephony, which enables developers to use straightforward commands to bring voice to web pages.

Carphone warns of muted broadband take-up

Carphone Warehouse has warned that revenues from its Talk Talk broadband services are likely to be muted this year.
In a trading statement, the company expects to add between 200,000 and 250,000 customers in the 12 months to March 2009.
In April, Carphone predicted it would boost its order book by 400,000. The company already has 2.8 million broadband customers.

Report forecasts boom in wireless broadband

Wireless broadband services will create "significant opportunities" for revenue growth, according to a new report from Analysys Mason.
By 2015, 2.1 billion wireless broadband customers around the world will generate $784 billion (£392 billion) in revenue, an increase of about 2,400 per cent.
This growth will be underpinned by improvements in handsets, ongoing developments in wireless technologies and flexible pricing options.
