Be Broadband announces network improvements

Tuesday 11th October 2011, by Harry Wallis

Be Broadband has announced that it is overhauling its core network in an effort to increase the bandwidth of its broadband bundles.

This process will begin at the start of 2012 and the work will be centred on preparing the network for the approaching transition to internet protocol version six, the company's official blog has revealed.

As well as this, the work will boost the resiliency of the broadband provider's infrastructure, which will mean that fewer customers will be impacted by the sporadic outages that are reported on the network, while more advanced broadband technologies will be made available.

Due to the core network roll-out, the firm will have to start migrating subscribers from its current infrastructure that is rented from BT. This will cause a small amount of broadband downtime and alter the IP addresses of customers.

Once the project begins, it is estimated that it will be finished within six to seven months.

A spokesperson for Be Broadband said: "As the migration takes place we'll be supporting both new and 'old' static IP addresses for 30 days, allowing everyone plenty of time to make the move when their turn comes.

"We'll also be changing the way we provide static IP addresses, bringing us in line with industry best practice and helping those customers who choose to source and configure their own routers."

The importance of having a resilient network infrastructure was exemplified recently when BT consumers suffered a power outage.

It caused broadband connections to stop working for many customers, after an exchange in Birmingham stopped functioning.

Customers in other areas of the country were impacted by the damage, though the specific number of people affected was not revealed.

However, BT affirmed that the majority of customers should not have lost their internet coverage for much longer than an hour.
