A recent test of real world broadband speed has found that Virgin Media and O2 (Be Broadband) are streets ahead of the nearest competitors.
O2 just had the edge over its close rival Virgin Media with 6.157 Mbps against 6.097 Mbps, according to broadband.co.uk.
Despite a higher average speed, the price comparison site revealed that Virgin Media had quicker download speeds in the evening and late at night.
The closest competitor to the top two was Sky with download speeds of 3.685 Mbps.
At the bottom of the top ten were AOL and Eclipse, whose real world download speeds did not reach 2 Mbps.
Virgin Media is currently offering up to 20 Mbps speeds for £10 a month for the first six months if a Virgin phone line is also signed up for.
For the broadband only, the fastest speed can be purchased for £29 each month for the first year and £36 after that.
