AOL launches a 'Socialthing'

Wednesday 29th April 2009, by Daniel King

AOL has announced a new service designed to help businesses attract new customers and clients using the latest in social networking and broadband internet technology.

The company has revealed details of the Socialthing service, stating that it will allow publishers to easily link their own platforms to a host of ways in which to engage with the general public.

Currently being deployed across 75 AOL sites by the firm's MediaGlow centralised publishing unit, it is hoped that once in place the platform will provide a way for firms to connect with up to around 181 million unduplicated international users.

Joanna Shields, president of AOL People Networks - the service provider's platform for social networking through sites like Bebo.com - said Socialthing was capable of making any type of media relevant to networking.

"Built on AOL's best-of-breed messaging technology, unrivalled social networking and media aggregation tools, Socialthing enables users to converse, connect and broadcast messages and their activities to friends on the web," she added.

So far, the service has been premiered on country music portal TheBoot and is soon to be launched on Cinematical - and online blog aimed at film and cinema buffs.

Bill Wilson, president of MediaGlow, commented that by providing a simple way to connect with such a vast network of users, there were ample opportunities for consumers and businesses.

"We have successfully created valuable brands around original and best-in-breed content by targeting the areas that people are most passionate," he explained.

AOL recently announced its Platform-A project had successfully launched the buy.at affiliate network for e-commerce marketing.
