Broadband comparisons 'to be made easier'

Thursday 24th June 2010, by Daniel King

An industry regulator has promised to explore ways of helping consumers to learn more about telecoms packages, including broadband subscriptions, in order for them to make a more informed choice on their purchases.

Ofcom told the Daily Express that many customers should opt for 'bundles', in which their broadband, television and phone services are bought as one deal, with consumers likely to make savings in a number of cases.

However, it added that while 44 per cent of households currently have a bundled agreement, there are still many people who are paying too much for their internet access.

A spokeswoman for the organisation claimed these kinds of offers are difficult to compare, adding: "Their complexity can easily put consumers off and make them more likely to stick with their current provider instead of shopping around for a better deal."

The representative went on to say that a proper review of the industry is one of the regulator's top priorities in 2010.

Many bundles often require the customer to sign up to a two-year contract, with penalty payments given to anyone who wishes to end their arrangement before this time.

According to the Daily Express, Ofcom has revealed there has been a "significant fall" in the number of people switching bundle providers over the last few years, with a decrease of 12 percentage points between 2008 and 2009 alone.

This may have prevented households from making big savings on their telecoms packages, it added.

Ofcom today (June 24th) published a discussion paper on internet traffic management, which could lead to more network operators being able to monitor online traffic with greater efficiency.
