Broadband-based Freeview box to enter market

Friday 26th October 2007, by Daniel King

A new hybrid version of the TV set-top box which combines Freeview and broadband services is to be launched next month.

Designed by Peter Dawe, who founded ex-broadband service provider Pipex, the new system links digital TV to internet TV service Babel TV, Digital Spy reports.

To be launched on November 6th, the box is set to take on Tiscali TV and BT Vision in the internet-digital crossover market. The box will have full broadband connection to the internet, as well as access to the Freeview channels.

Mr Dawe explained: "Anybody can plug a Babel TV box into a Freeview aerial and a broadband connection. That's all it takes to be all set to watch, record and pause Freeview TV. You can watch TV programmes from the internet, surf the web and shop online."

Pipex was bought out by Tiscali earlier this year for £210 million.
