BT to improve 21CN thanks to Alcatel-Lucent deal

Wednesday 5th May 2010, by Daniel King

BT's next generation broadband service is expected to receive a boost thanks to the involvement of Alcatel-Lucent.

It's been announced that the two firms have signed a new five-year deal that will assist the "evolution" of BT's 21st Century Network (21CN).

Now, what is 21CN?

Well, this is the foundation of the telecoms company's IP (internet protocol) transformation - a software-driven consumer network aimed at offering a better internet service for its customers.

The core and transmission network has so far been completed by BT, with 14 million homes and businesses making use of the 21CN wholesale broadband system Wholesale Broadband Connect.

And the agreement will see Alcatel-Lucent's High Leverage Network architecture and transformational offerings to "evolve BT's infrastructure, enabling the company to expedite network convergence, increase capacity and deliver content cost effectively".

In addition, the deal is expected to "increase performance, capacity and bandwidth to a broader customer base".

Commenting on the news, Lakh Jemmett, vice-president at Alcatel-Lucent North Europe, said: "BT's 21CN is one of the most complete, exciting and ambitious business transformation programmes anywhere in the global telecommunications industry."

He went on to express his delight that his firm had the chance to help "BT to transform [its] business, transform [its] networks and deliver powerful new services in a scalable, cost-effective way."

Alcatel-Lucent describes itself as a leader in fixed, converged and mobile broadband networking, optics and IP technologies and a transformation partner of businesses, strategic industries and service providers.
