Expert comments on integrated services

One expert has commented on discussions at a recent industry event that show how mobile phones, broadband technology and high-definition television are becoming a more converged group of products.

In an article for the CCS Insight Blog, Paolo Pescatore looks back at his recent time spent at the 2009 IBC conference at the RAI Centre in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

He explained that despite the current state of the economic climate, many industry experts and interested parties turned out to discuss the future of the telecommunications and broadcasting industry.

Although numbers were down for the event on the previous year - with attendance dropping seven per cent to 45,547 - Mr Pescatore went on to say there were a number of interesting points raised at various keynote sessions.

He added: "At IBC, the BBC announced it might open its iPlayer platform to third parties. People are starting to want this kind of service on their mobile phone," and suggested this could lead to accelerated plans for next-generation networks.

Of course, those in the market for their own bundled broadband, television and telephone package have seen a number of new options introduced of late which could affect their decision - or possibly convince some customers to switch providers.

This week it was announced that the BT Vision package now offers a 24-hour on-demand shopping facility hosted by former Big Breakfast presenter Gaby Roslin.

Earlier this month, the group also unveiled the addition of Bolly and Beyond to the service - which allows access to Asian cinema, TV and music on a subscription and pay-per-view basis.
