Fibre cables 'important' for business networks

Wednesday 9th March 2011, by Daniel King

Businesses looking to boost their broadband speeds should explore their cable options, it has been suggested.

Before upgrading business networks, companies should assess their requirements in terms of what their network needs to deliver, according to Network Communications News (NCN).

Some firms will benefit from an expensive, top of the range cabling system, whereas for other firms it could be a waste of money.

Michael Crane, editor of NCN, says firms need to take the time to look at the fibre optic cabling options available and ask an expert what the "best fit" would be.

He said: "While investing in a top of the range, so-called future proof cabling system may well prove a sound investment if the your business requires high-end speed and performance, for example, in a financial institution, it is pointless spending the budget on an all-singing, all-dancing fibre optic system if there is no need for it."

New classes of fibre will have an impact on businesses as demands grow, he added.

The new OM4 and OS2 classes of fibre could help to boost business networks' performance.

Mr Crane says the OM4 is an ideal choice for multiple applications including local area networks (LAN) and data centres.

In addition, the new multi-mode fibre is the best platform on the market for ten Gigabit Ethernet and 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet.

The latest fibre cables will become increasingly important as demand for more bandwidth and higher speeds continues to grow, NCN predicts.

Businesses looking to make use of the latest communications technology could consider Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

VoIP technology provides a "rich integration" of business communication, according to PlanetMagpie.

The IT consultancy and managed IT service provider says VoIP can boost productivity in the workplace, as well as cut communications costs, which could boost company profits.
