Internet TV popularity 'rising'

(Thu, 18th October 2007)

The number of Brits watching TV downloaded via the internet has almost doubled in the past year, new statistics show.

Over 2.9 million people have either watched internet TV through broadband streaming or have downloaded shows so far during 2007; a figure which equates to ten per cent of all UK surfers, a study by Continental Research suggests.

The research found that as many as 40 per cent of surfers are likely to try out the BBC's new iPlayer system to watch their favourite programmes. Currently, Channel 4's 4OD service is the most popular run by a TV network in the UK, ISPreview.co.uk reports.

A statement from Continental Research said: "Helping to explain the growth of internet TV, satisfaction amongst those viewing TV online is generally positive, with only 12 per cent not satisfied with the service overall. The areas with the greatest dissatisfaction relate to the size of the picture and the quality of the sound and picture."

The first internet TV show was broadcast in 1994.
