IPTV subscriptions 'up 179% in 12 months'

Friday 12th October 2007, by Daniel King

Global use of internet protocol television (IPTV) nearly quadrupled in the year to the end of June, according to new statistics.

As the number of broadband connections increases rapidly throughout the world, the number of people accessing IPTV services jumped 179 per cent in the last year, data from Point Topic suggests.

However, out of the total number of broadband customers, only eight million people worldwide are subscribed to IPTV services. Europe has the main subscription base, with five million users - half of which are located in France.

Point Topic senior analyst John Bosnell said: "Markets like France and Hong Kong show that IPTV can be deployed rapidly to large numbers of subscribers, if the market conditions are right. These markets highlight what is going to be important going forward through 2007 and 2008."

The first IPTV broadcast was made in 1994.
