Life online 'affects our health and behaviour'

The internet and telecommunications technologies are having a real impact on the way people live their lives and behave towards others, one sector analyst has suggested.

A spokesman for New Media Intelligence (NMI), a web monitoring organisation which provides data services for independent companies and professionals in the public relations field, said there were all kinds of ways in which the modern world was being changed by electronics.

Tim Haughton, managing director of the firm, said he believed there were a large number of people using technology that was making their lives better and subsequently healthier.

He suggested developments in mobile systems were one particular area where people were learning about how best to behave and noted one particular campaign that had targeted smokers.

"Technology is one aspect of this but awareness of - and interest in - a healthier lifestyle is a much broader phenomenon," Mr Haughton added.

He explained people were more likely nowadays to adhere to a "sensible diet and regular exercise" in order to prolong their life - but often only if they are able to pick this up from the various media platforms surrounding them.

"It takes many years for such messages to affect behaviour."

The comments follow recent research from Kingston University that revealed human behaviour is often subconsciously influenced by what is believed to be normal by the individual.

It was suggested this perception can be based on information we find online and through social networking sites like Facebook.
