Nokia takes on Apple in downloading market

Friday 31st August 2007, by Daniel King

Apple's iTunes store is set to have a new rival as mobile phone handset manufacturer Nokia has launched a music and gaming download store.

The Nokia Music Store will offer users of its 3G handsets access to thousands of albums from their phones or PCs. The price of a track will start at €1 (67p) with albums costing from €10 (£6.70).

It will make Nokia a direct rival to Apple, which integrates a similar system on its iPhone. Nokia has also launched a new range of phones compatible with the new technology, which will go live this autumn.

Tommi Mustonen, head of Nokia's music activities, said: "The Nokia Music Store brings together a powerful combination of great music and great devices in an easy to use way. You can select from a huge range of music, including local music from your country, and download it directly to your Nokia device."

Last week, Nokia announced a deal with software giant Microsoft to enable its customers to gain access to a number of products, including Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger.
