O2 delivers flexible broadband packages

Monday 6th September 2010, by Daniel King

O2 has responded to popular demand for shorter broadband packages.

The monthly contracts could be ideal for students, renters and those who move between properties for work-related reasons.

Subscribers to the monthly deal will have to pay an additional charge of £29.99 to take advantage of the flexible offer.

Prior to this, contracts covered a standard period of 12 months.

The broadband provider is offering now more flexible deals that are suited to actual usage and consumption.

It has titled its three new packages 'The Basics', 'The All Rounder' and the 'The Works'.

Customers on all three packages will be able to get the first three months free, but prices will start from around £8 for the basics package.

A survey of 2,000 consumers commissioned by O2 found that many UK consumers are wasting money on packages with unnecessarily fast speeds.

Only one in five respondents actually used their computer for media streaming and other heavy usage activities.

More than three-quarters (77 per cent) said they primarily used their computer for emailing, while 74 per cent said they used it for general surfing.

The research comes on the back of a separate study from the industry regulator Ofcom that found that the average actual speed of broadband connections is less than half that of advertised speeds.
