PCs under siege: Online threat rises in 2007

PCs under siege: Online threat rises in 2007 Computers have come under unprecedented attacks from internet criminals over the first two months of this year, according to new research.

The most common forms of attack were found to be phishing, when fraudsters attempt to gain access to sensitive information while masquerading as a trustworthy source, and malware, when software clandestinely infiltrates or damages a computer.

Phishing attacks jumped 50 per cent in January and February this year, according to the research by US computer protection firm Cyveillance, while malware attacks rose 200 per cent.

It is now believed that over a million unique web pages contain malware, which has recently evolved from being an innocuous nuisance to a damaging tool used for financial gain.

The number of brands phished was found to have increased from 800 to 1200, with Credit unions, associations, banks, insurance companies and payment services the most affected.

Panos Anastassiadis, CEO of Cyveillance, said: "As our research shows, the breadth and depth of online risk are on the rise, with increasingly elaborate attack schemes and tactics."
