Sky announces new live drama project

Tuesday 26th May 2009, by Daniel King

A new show has been announced that could be popular with theatre goers who happen to have the right Sky television package.

The broadband services provider has announced the launch of Sky Arts Theatre Live! this week - an initiative that aims to bring together a host of different talents to create something special for drama fans.

Broadcast live on the Sky Arts 1 channel - and available in high definition via the station's HD sister platform - the series will take six bestselling authors and team them up with five directors and twenty actors.

These groups will then be challenged to create a number of original performances based on the work of the writers - who will be taking on playwright duties for the first time.

Some of the names so far involved include director John Alderton, actress Pauline Collins – perhaps best-known for her role as Shirley Valentine in the 1989 film of the same name - and author Kate Mosse. The associated company will be led by TV and radio personality Sandi Toksvig.

Commenting on the ambitious project, the former Whose Line is it Anyway? And Call My Bluff contributor said part of the idea behind the series was to bring British television drama back to its roots as a live medium.

"Now Sky Arts brings back genuine reality television – drama as it happens," she added.

"Vibrant, immediate, warts-and-all, I started my career in live television. It has an energy that cannot be found elsewhere and I am delighted to be going back."

The Sky HD package can be purchased as part of the company's combined broadband, telephone and television offering.
