A report by a child psychologist has called for greater help for parents - to assist them in protecting their children online.

Broadband consumers could be interested in the report by Dr Tanya Byron, which showed that codes of practice may help parents overwhelmed by the choice of social networking sites and computer games.

Dr Byron explained: "Ironically parents' concerns about risk and safety of their children in the streets and outside has driven a generation of children indoors, where it could be argued they are being exposed to a whole new set of risks."

However, she has asked that a national council be installed to implement the support - such as the reclassification of video games to help parents with broadband understand what is suitable for their children.

The Home Office has developed the Thinkuknow website which helps young people and parents keep safe while using modern technology such as mobile phones and the internet.
