Virgin Media boosts sports content offering

Broadband customers looking to switch providers in favour of a combined package that includes a telephone and television package may be swayed by the latest announcement from Virgin Media.
The company has revealed details of a new partnership with ESPN that will see more sport come to its set-top boxes across the UK and will form part of its XL package.
No extra cost will be applied to those who already subscribe to the television offering and consumers with high definition facilities have also been told they will be able to view the new channel in the format's full resolution in addition to having access to standard broadcasts.
ESPN will offer Virgin Media's 3.5 million digital TV users across the UK - as well as any new customers that opt for the XL pack - live Barclays Premier League football as well as the latest action from Scottish and international leagues.
In addition to the other wide range of sporting viewing the service will offer, another channel will be included in the form of ESPN Classic - which looks back at some great moments in history.
Mark Schweitzer, chief commercial officer of Virgin Media, said the deal would solidify the brand's name as one of the best-value home entertainment offerings currently on the market
"We've got all the sports content you'd expect and adding the new ESPN channels to our line-up will mean our customers can watch all the football action they want," he added.
Earlier this month, Virgin Media announced it had upgraded its broadband technology to better serve homes in the UK with its up to 50 Mb service.
