VoIP industry "growing strongly"

The voice over internet protocol (VoIP) communications industry is "growing strongly" in the UK, an industry body has claimed.

While the market continues to grow within the UK, the country is still behind the majority of Europe on the take-up of the software, the Internet Telephony Services Providers Association (ITSPA) said.

Statistics from industry regulator Ofcom released last month found that there is an estimated one million VoIP users in the UK, with figures continuously growing. Awareness of the technology is also growing, with 60 per cent of UK adults knowing about VoIP service.

Eli Katz, ITSPA chairman, said: "We are growing strongly, but there are other countries that are already at twenty, thirty per cent level of penetration - in terms of all subscribers utilising VoIP services. But here in the UK it's still certainly in the single digits; probably the lower end of single digits, but growing strongly."

ITSPA was formed to represent network operators, service providers and other businesses involved with the supply of VoIP services within the UK.
