Web-based TV could increase broadband need

High-speed broadband could become increasingly important if the major entertainment producers choose to focus on web-based television series.

The New York Times has reported that independent film actress Illeana Douglas has turned to the internet to help her to create a mini-series.

Sponsored by Swedish furniture giant Ikea, Easy to Assemble sees Douglas play the part of a Hollywood actress who becomes "a cog in a blue-collar wheel".

Between October and February, the show drew more than 1.5 million views a month, the news source reported.

This could be the latest hint that made-for-Web TV could become part of our daily lives.

However, people who don't have access to a quality broadband service are likely to miss out on new entertainment such as this.

Slow dial-up connections could prove to be frustrating to users keen to enjoy video content.

Rob Barnett, chief executive of My Damn Channel, which features original comedy and music shows, told the NY Times: "There's an inevitability to Web video that makes it exciting."

He added: "I often think of my daily business life as a guy running a cable network in the early 1980s.

"There is, no matter how you slice it, a timeline for any new industry to grow."

Meanwhile, Ms Douglas holds the medium and her sponsor in high-regard for allowing her great autonomy on production. A third season of Easy to Assemble is being shot this summer and she is on the hunt for a second sponsor.

"Nobody doubts anymore that this is the best way to make entertainment," she said.
