Archbishop goes online
Archbishop goes online
(Wednesday, 2nd January 2008)
Following the announcement that broadband users could see the Queen's Christmas message being shown on YouTube, the Archbishop of Canterbury has recorded a new year speech for the website.
In it, Dr Rowan Williams encourages environmentally-aware behaviour, saying that "God does not do waste".
He also suggests a sustainable approach to technology, explaining that the way gadgets are replaced annually could reflect our social attitudes.
"Do we end up tempted to think of people and relationships as disposable?," the archbishop states.
"A culture of vast material waste and emotional short-termism is a culture that is a lot more fragile than it knows," he adds.
However, YouTube could have competition in 2008, according to the Independent, as video sharing website Metacafe looks set to offer British filmmakers the chance to share advertising revenue.
The company currently pays $5 (£2.50) for every 1,000 views of a clip and heavily filters content to avoid piracy and ensure good quality videos for broadband users.
