Average broadband speeds 'rising'

Wednesday 28th November 2007, by Daniel King

The average downloading speed of residential DSL broadband connections is on the rise across the globe, according to a new report.

Figures from research firm Point Topic have shown that speeds rose in areas such as western Europe, eastern Europe and Latin America during the third quarter of 2007.

In western Europe, average speeds increased by 6.2 per cent over the period to 5.5 Mbps, with the biggest increase seen in the Asia Pacific region, where speeds shot up to almost 15 Mbps.

"The most significant changes were seen in Asia Pacific and south and east Asia," commented Fiona Vanier, research analyst for Point Topic.

"This is due to operators such as China Tietong and NTT, which have introduced services with downstream speeds as high as 100 Mbps."

In the UK, Virgin Media is set to upgrade its broadband network to 50 Mbps by the end of 2008.
