Bandwidth demand 'to double in 2 years'
Thursday 17th July 2008, by Daniel King
Demands on the internet look set to double in the next two years, meaning that network and internet service providers will face increasing pressure to invest in infrastructure.
According to a report commissioned by photonics firm CIP Technologies, annual demand in 2010 will exceed the combined demand of the past eight years.
This can be attributed to the increasing prevalence of online video and data services.
David Payne, of the Institute of Advanced Telecommunications at Swansea University, predicts that usage could grow by up to 100 times by 2018.
But this is assuming capacity is made available by network operators, he remarked.
He continued: "Further consideration of the types of networks and the technology deployed is required if they are to ensure profitability."
Market research firm GfK recently said conditions are now right for mobile broadband to take off now that operators have cut prices to a level that is acceptable to the public.
