Battle over Narnia name
Tuesday 17th June 2008, by Daniel King
Broadband users may be aware that domain names for websites can make great presents, but one father found himself embroiled in a legal battle with CS Lewis.
After purchasing the name Narnia.mobi for his son, Richard Saville-Smith was contacted by CS Lewis Ltd, which controls the rights of the author of the Narnia books, reports the Guardian.
He was accused of cyber-squatting and has been threatened with a hearing at the Geneva HQ of the World Intellectual Property Organisation, which is part of the UN.
Mr Saville-Smith explained: "We were amazed the domain name was still free and snapped it up for Comrie, who is a big fan of the Narnia books."
Despite the threats, via New York lawyer Baker & McKenzie, the father has said he is not backing down and has described it as an attempt to "bully" the family.
However, most bought domain names purchased can be a safe way to take advantage of the web.
The BBC reported earlier in the year that the release of the .asia suffix had led to a spate of purchases from internet users utilising the web to protect and promote their brand or name.
