Boost for online shopping as economy sours

Boost for online shopping as economy sours Widespread access to broadband and the rising cost of travelling to shops to buy goods has resulted in an increase in the number of people shopping online.

This is one of Capgemini UK's key findings after conducting a survey into retail habits in the UK as the economy softens.

The study shows that the convenience of online shopping has enticed Britons who are making an extra effort to reduce the cost of living.

Mike Petevinos, head of consulting at Capgemini, said: "The online channel continues to grow its share of retail spend thanks to the traditional drivers of convenience and choice.

"These drivers appear to be magnified by the current economic environment."

The Capgemini retail sales index, published last month, revealed that UK shoppers spent over £26.5 billion online in the first half of 2008, which is up 38 per cent on the previous year.
