Broadband users in Bournemouth will soon be able to get super-fast broadband through a fibre network which will be run through the sewer system, reports the Press Association.
The scheme, which will be developed by H2O Networks, could mean internet users enjoy speeds of up to 100 Mbps making the seaside town the first of its kind to utilise technology in this way.
Chief executive officer of the company Elfred Thomas explained: "This is just the start of bringing next generation connectivity to the UK."
He added that many services that are being used on the current networks are stretching the current availability too far.
Bournemouth was chosen as the town council needed to link up the town hall and International Centre in a fast, inexpensive way - leading to its position as the UK's first fibrecity.
Using sewers has allowed H2O to spread the use of its dark fibre system, which does not affect the usability of the sewer but can provide super-fast broadband in an environmentally-friendly and low cost way.
