Bournemouth set for superfast broadband

Tuesday 20th January 2009, by Daniel King

Residents in Bournemouth will soon be able to take advantage of a new superfast broadband service, it has been revealed.

Web users in the town could benefit from speeds up to ten times faster than standard connections as plans for its new Fibrecity network are rolled out.

The fibre to the home programme - the largest of its kind in the UK - is set to be completed by 2010, with 40 per cent of local businesses and residents already having signed up.

Furthermore, an initial 30 homes will have access to the new connection by the end of March.

These customers will also benefit from a number of next generation services including internet protocol television and remote home security.

The fibre optic connections will be delivered via the town's sewer network and will also be laid down in Dundee as Fibrecity seeks to develop networks across the UK.

Elfed Thomas, chief executive officer of H20 Networks Group, Fibrecity's parent company, said the initiative is progressing "according to plan".

"This is an exciting development for Fibrecity," Mr Thomas commented.

"We are in a very strong position and are having positive discussions with a number of key content providers and that can provide wholesale access to Fibrecity customers," he added.

The development comes after the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts called for the government to make superfast broadband access available throughout the UK by 2014.

Failure to do so would see the UK lose out on "a critical opportunity", the group suggested.
