Broadband access 'in 69% of UK homes'

Some 69 per cent of households in the UK have access to broadband services, according to the latest data.
Eurostat, the statistical office of the European communities, has published figures showing that access to broadband in the UK is 12 and seven per cent up on 2007 and 2008 respectively.
In its Internet Access and Use in 2009 study, the organisation suggested that 77 per cent of UK homes have access to any form of internet - not just broadband - and this figure has grown by ten per cent in the last two years.
The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark and Sweden lead the way when it comes to internet access, as 90, 87, 86 and 83 per cent of these respective nation's households have the web.
Bulgaria (30 per cent of homes), Greece and Romania (both 38 per cent) are the countries where contact with online services is most limited.
According to Eurostat, 66 per cent of 16 to 74-year-olds in the UK used the internet in the last 12 months to buy or order goods or services. Some 37 per cent of people in the same age group across all 27 European Union (EU) countries paid for something online.
Earlier this year, Viviane Reding, the EU's commissioner for information society and media, said online retail could grow four-fold if a borderless online market - which includes the sales of books and video games - was created.
"Achieving a digital single market is a top priority for Europe," she stressed.
