Broadband being used for social media

Tuesday 17th August 2010, by Daniel King

Usage of broadband internet for social media purposes has grown exponentially over the last couple of years, new figures show.

Data from industry analysis firm IMRG revealed that 48.9 per cent of web users are now visiting social networking sites, which is a four-fold increase from 2008.

More than half the total population of the UK goes online at least once a day, meaning the overall access to the web across the country is strong.

In addition, the IMRG figures showed that online shopping is continuing to be popular among consumers in Britain.

"How we access the internet also continues to change radically. For the first time there is now evidence of the growing importance of internet access via a mobile device, which, as a proportion of access methods, has grown to 15.1 per cent, from only five per cent in June 2008," the report said.

It added: "While a picture of consumers increasingly using their mobiles and other devices to visit social networking sites and to shop online may drive preconceptions about their age, growth in these areas is not limited to the youth market."

The IMRG study comes just days after a thinktank in Scotland called for that country's government to roll out a digital strategy that will improve broadband access north of the border.

According to the Reform Scotland report, plans outlined in the Digital Economy Act 2010, which was passed in Westminster earlier this year, may not be appropriate for Scottish consumers.
