Broadband Britain: 20 per cent now subscribe
Over one in five Britons now have access to a broadband internet connection, a new report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reveals.
The UK is now the 11th most densely penetrated broadband market out of the world's most developed 30 countries, with 13 million of us now using high speed internet on a regular basis.
Out of every 100 Britons, 21.6 have broadband internet, compared to just 0.6 in 2001 - a 36-fold increase.
Greater availability, faster speeds and lower cost brought about by increased competition between broadband providers have been the primary factors behind the uptake both business and domestic customers.
Overall, broadband subscribers in the OECD increased 26 per cent from 157 million in December 2005 to 197 million in December 2006.
The Netherlands, Switzerland and the five Nordic counties lead the European charge in terms of broadband uptake with at least 26 subscribers for each 100 inhabitants.
At 62 per cent, most connections in the 30 OECD countries are DSL, followed by 29 per cent cable modems, seven per cent fibre-to-home and only two per cent other connections, such as wireless.
