Broadband 'changes news agenda'
Thursday 13th September 2007, by Daniel King
The growth and availability of broadband services is changing the public perception of the daily news agenda, according to a new study.
Citizen journalism is growing due to broadband technologies and a news agenda formulated completely by citizens would be radically different from that put together by journalists, findings by the Project for Excellence in Journalism concluded.
While traditional newspapers have been slow to take up online portals, sites such as Digg and Reddit have allowed citizen journalism to expand. Even more traditional news providers, such as the BBC, now carry links for these sites at the end of each article.
Tom Rosenstiel, one of the authors of the report, said: "These sites offer people a different take on the news but it doesn't mean that traditional journalism has become irrelevant. They are forming more of secondary conversation about the news."
The popularity of citizen journalism has been attributed to blogs and the growth in use of mobile phones with camera facilities, with more broadcasters relying on public content than ever before.
