Broadband content providers 'shouldn't pay for improvements'

Tuesday 29th April 2008, by Daniel King

The development of the broadband infrastructure should not be paid for by content providers such as the BBC, according to ispreview.co.uk.

Editor-in-chief of the website Mark Jackson has said that internet service providers should not be asking content providers for funding - an issue he says could become "murky".

Mr Jackson explained: "Content providers make the internet, in all its various forms. If the BBC were forced to contribute to a handful of ISPs then other providers would no doubt demand a piece of the pie too - who decides what is fair?"

He added that the low prices charged by broadband providers did not allow enough spare money to deal properly with increasingly "bandwidth hungry" sites such as iPlayer, highlighting the need to research the best deal.

The comments came after Tiscali asked that the BBC paid for the required improvements needed to the internet, in order to deal with the popularity of its iPlayer service.
