Broadband improvements for County Durham
Monday 10th March 2008, by Daniel King
Broadband customers living in rural areas of County Durham could find their service improved by a multi-million pound investment in high-speed services.
The upgrading work will affect the Teesdale and Weardale areas, bringing high-speed broadband to residents and local businesses, reports the Northern Echo.
Although funding for the project has not yet been confirmed, Alastair Dinwiddie of Aladin Enterprises has spoken to the Teesdale Parish Forum about his findings in conjunction with the West Durham Rural Pathfinder Broadband Project.
Mr Dinwiddie said: "What it would do is bring a solution to all the areas that haven't got a solution and provide existing users with a much better service."
It could mean that area around County Durham will eventually enjoy broadband speeds of around 50 MB, although the top speed will be 10 MB, according to the report.
Broadband services are also being developed by Durham county council, with the establishment of DurhamNet, a network providing improved internet connections for those living in the area.
