Broadband links to 'useful' alternate worlds for kids

Tuesday 27th May 2008, by Daniel King

Parents with broadband could be providing their children with links to virtual worlds which may help them develop, according to a BBC report.

A study was undertaken using the Adventure Rock virtual world, developed by Larian for the corporation, which appeared to help children rehearse skills for the real-world.

After testing the world, children were shown to fit into different roles, such as social climbers, fighters or nurturers.

Professor David Gauntlett oversaw the young people's testing of Adventure Rock, explaining that such worlds, available to broadband users, could be a relief from "passive media" such as television.

Meanwhile, broadband provider TalkTalk has said that its research showed that seven out of ten parents believe their children get a better education than earlier generations, because of access to the internet.

It was also revealed that 64 per cent of parents think the government is responsible for ensuring all school children have access to the internet at home.
