Broadband plans 'will benefit everyone'

Monday 8th March 2010, by Daniel King

The proposed rollout of broadband in every household in the UK is going to have an extremely positive effect on residents up and down the country, according to an expert.

It was recently revealed by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills that its Broadband Delivery UK programme will assist the aim of bringing high-speed internet to millions of British homes.

What's more, the department stated that the £1 billion Next Generation Fund would deliver next generation broadband to 90 per cent of the country by 2017.

Commenting on the announcement, Shane Wright, technical director for eDigitalResearch, said that these measures are going to benefit "everyone", particularly those who live in the countryside.

"For rural people it aids local communication and enables internet-based provision of services, information and delivery," he remarked.

Mr Wright continued by explaining that "this facilitates the trivial such as online grocery shopping and the more abstract [such as] publicising local events.

"It is especially important where transportation difficulties exist; either because users are remote or because they are older or cannot drive - which is more common in rural demographics."

What's more, he stated that the move could even close the digital divide between rich and poor.

So it looks like this really could make millions of lives much easier - and about time too.

With everything seemingly moving online these days, why should people suffer just because they don't live in towns?

But I just hope the ambitious plans can be carried out.

What do you think about the proposals?
