Broadband reaches 1 in 3 Europeans

Broadband reaches 1 in 3 Europeans Almost a third of Europeans are now wired up to a high speed broadband connection, according to a new report by the European Commission (EC).

The survey of 27,000 households across the continent found that while broadband was on the rise, fixed phone landlines are becoming less popular as people are moving over to internet telephony.

Due to the increase in bundling packages available to customers nowadays, nearly a fifth of Europeans buy two or more telecom products from a single company, with the combination of fixed phone lines and internet access being the most common bundled products.

Viviane Reding, the EC's information, society and media commissioner, said: "Europe's digital economy is growing strongly as more and more households embrace convergence between fixed, mobile and internet services."

"The challenge of this year's reform of the EU's telecom rules will be to respond to this rapidly changing technological environment while enhancing at the same time effective competition."

The survey also found that most European households (53 per cent) access the web via ADSL lines compared to just 34 per cent using wireless connections.
