Broadband speed 'is key to successful online shopping'

Online retailers have been advised to design and operate a website which is simple and effective for broadband users if they are to succeed.
Easy navigation, the ability to move between pages quickly using broadband and a pleasing layout are aspects of a website which could reduce stress levels among browsers.
IT management company CA conducted the research, concluding that the stress and irritation found in web users when accessing a poorly-made website rose by 50 per cent.
Volunteers were wired up to a neurological and physiological testing system and asked to use a number of websites via a broadband connection.
Kobi Korsah, CA's director of Europe, Middle East and Africa product marketing, says: "The results of this study send out a clear message businesses need to reduce web stress and improve the online experience of their customers if they're going to maximise returns from their web channel."
He adds that website design, performance and the connection speed of the broadband being used are key factors in determining the enjoyment people get out of a site - which is linked to how much they spend.
Consumers who pay out for the latest broadband technology expect to be able to take advantage of it, meaning poorly-designed websites are likely to be frowned upon even more by those with a super-fast connection.
An increasing number of Britons are likely to find themselves in such a position, after BT recently announced its intention to share its high-speed fibre-optic cables with other providers, allowing more people to benefit from the fastest broadband rates.
