Broadband subscriptions 'to reach one billion'
Monday 2nd August 2010, by Daniel King
Broadband appears to be going from strength to strength with recent figures suggesting that subscriptions could reach one billion globally by 2015.
The prediction, which comes from research carried out by US firm Strategic Analytics, would mean that worldwide broadband subscriptions would grow by nine per cent on today's levels.
However, despite the envisaged levels of growth, we should remember that the majority of people around the world do not even have access to the most basic connection speeds, never mind high speed broadband services.
As Ben Piper, the director of Strategy Analytics Multiplay Market Dynamics service and the author of the report, said: "While broadband growth has been impressive, it is important to note that in 2010 more than 60 per cent of households worldwide have no access to the Internet - much less broadband."
This disparity in current levels of internet access could have some influence over the fact that growth in broadband subscriptions is not expected to be even across the continents.
Strategy Analytics predicted that 45 per cent of all broadband subscriptions will come from the Asia Pacific region, which will mean that the continent has a compound annual growth rate of nearly 18 per cent over the next five years.
The report could mean that UK internet service providers are prompted to up their game in order to continue to tempt British users with better broadband deals.
An earlier study from Strategic Analytics placed that UK in 23rd place in terms of broadband development. In accordance with the latest report, the Asia Pacific countries of South Korea and Hong Kong took first and second place respectively.
