Broadband subscriptions 'to soar to 536m'

Broadband subscriptions 'to soar to 536m' Broadband subscriptions worldwide are set to exceed 536 million by 2011, according to a new report.

Findings by the Strategy Analytics research group highlight that digital subscriber line broadband will account for more than half of the market, while fibre and WiMax will be two of the fastest-growing technologies over the coming five years.

Revenues generated by broadband services are also set to rise to $150 billion (£73.95 billion) by 2011, representing a 13 per cent compound return on investment, the firm states.

David Mercer, vice president of the Strategy Analytics Digital Consumer Practice, said however that broadband providers should not rest on their laurels as a result of the findings.

"Fibre-to-the-home will eventually provide the ultimate broadband experience for many users, including high definition TV and lightning-fast interactive web-based services," he stated.

Swedish analyst firm Berg-Insight recently forecast that European mobile broadband connections will have reached 30 million by 2011.
