Broadband take-up predicted to boom

There will be about 21 million broadband lines in the UK by the end of 2012, new research has indicated.
While broadband growth is currently in decline, the increasing use of social networking websites will help to push the number of installed lines to more than 20 million in the next five years, according to research company Point Topic.
Tim Johnson, chief analyst for the firm, told Computing magazine that Point Topic expects some four per cent of unconnected households will gain web access every year.
"That is roughly the average for the past two years as a whole, but much better than in the last few quarters - so it implies improved performance by the industry," he commented.
Point Topic's research also suggested that some 73 per cent of UK households will be logging on to the web via a fast internet connection in 2012, as well as 85 per cent of businesses.
According to research from analyst Screen Digest, the UK represents one of the most developed broadband markets in Europe behind the Netherlands, Switzerland and nations in the Nordic region.
